TYPES OF INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA


Audio

Audio is an electrical or digital representation sound. Audio divided into two parts, Aural and Oral.
Aural means of or relating tense of hearing. Oral means speaking.
Role of Audio are to teach listening skills and to teach pronunciation and intonation.

Characteristics of media :

1.     Clarity of voice
2.     Relevant to the topic
3.     Clear pitch of the audio
4.     Apropriate length
5.     Appropriate language
6.     Unblased content

Advantages of Audio :

1.     Useful to add
2.     Can be used as a set induction strategy
3.     Can clarify problems and ambiguity
4.     Can aid memory
5.     Can be use in stimulating emotions
6.     Helpful in learning language

Disadvantages of Audio :

1.     Need more monitoring
2.     Controlling device is hard
3.     Can’t learn read
4.     Consume time
5.     Ascessing or selecting topics

Type of Audio :

Visual

Visual is something you look at (such as a picture, chart, or film) that is used to make something more appealing or easier to understand.
Visual Media can be used in almost any discipline to enhance learning, both in class, and also for out-of-class assignments. Short film and television clips, written articles, and blog postings can be viewed to reinforce concepts and spark discussion. Songs and music videos, especially when the lyrics are made available, can be used to the same effect.

Advantages of Visual :
1.    Many media sources have very high production quality capable of showcasing complex ideas in a short period of time. This helps develop quantitative reasoning.
2.     Media offers both cognitive and affective experiences. It can provoke discussion, an assessment of one's  values, and an assessment of self if the scenes have strong emotional content.
3.     The use of media visual  help connect learners with events that are culturally relevant.
      - News stories can be used to connect theories taught in the classroom with real world events and policies.

Disadvantages of Visual :
1.     Slow and not effective
2.     Consume time
3.     There is no Audio so we just see the materials

Type of Visual :

3.     Diagram
4.     Sketch

Audio Visual

Audio visual means  designed to aid in learning or teaching by making use of both hearing and sight.

The purpose of Audio Visual :
1.                1.   They help to avoid excessive, empty and meaningless verbalization in teaching English.
2.     They provide direct sense experience to students.
3.     They help students to form clear and accurate concepts in English.
4.     They make teaching and learning effective.
5.     They provide variety to teaching.

Characteristics of Audio visual :

2.     Accuracy
3.     Interest
4.     Comprehensibility
5.     Motivation
6.     Realism

Advantages of Audio Visual :
1.     They create interest for learning in the students.
2.     They are time saving because they explain the idea easily and precisely.
3.     By their use the burden of teacher is reduced.
4.     The teacher can improve his own English by aural aids.
5.     They are the sources of a variety of experiences for students.

Disadvantages of Audio Visual :

Computer Based

Computer based attempt that can be used to describe vicrtually any land of learning program using computers as a central staple. This type of learning has been used as a tool in the midst of a more traditional classroom experience.

Role of Computer Based :
1.     Cognitive of objectives
2.     The purpose of effective
3.     Psychomotor of adjective

Characteristic of Computer Based :
1.     Computer assistance instructional
2.     Computer management nstruction
3.     Computer media learning

Advantages of Computer based ;
1.     Provide opportunities for students to save problem individually
2.     Provide learning content are many and varled
3.     Capable of motivating students to learn

Disadvantages of Computer Based :
1.     Learners with low motivator or bad study habbits may fall behind
2.     Students may feel isolate from the instructor and calssmates
3.     Instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help

Realia

Realia is real life object that enable students to make connections to their own lives. Students understand and retain the meaning of a word better when they have seen or touched some object associated with it. In language teaching Realia are actual object, which have the purpose outside the classroom and can be used in the classroom. Meanwhile in the ESP classes, the word Realia means using real items found in everyday life as an aid to teaching English.

Example of Realia :
1.     To illustrate and teach young learners vocabulary for animals, clothing, and fruit for example, using actual objects or facsimiles there of (pieces of clothing, toy animals, and plastic fruit). For transition period, it’s a very useful tool in making the abstract concrete.
2.     Use an object, such as a ball, to teach prepositions of place like “on, under, above.” Place the ball on the table, and ask where it is. Elicit the reply “It’s on the table,” and so on.

Advantages of Realia :
1.     Makes lessons more interesting
2.     Realia is a link between language learning and sociocultural learning
3.     Accessible
4.     Relevant
5.     Visually interesting and captures the attention of the learner

Disadvantages of Realia :
1.     Real objects may not support a cultural distinction
2.     Activities with real objects might lose tha class path
3.     Spending too much time in one activity with real objects in the class
